Why Every Workaholic Entrepreneur Needs an “OBX Weekend”

I almost forgot to share something important with you. Not because it wasn’t meaningful, but because I was already diving headfirst back into the workweek. Sound familiar?

Last weekend, my amazing wife Julie and I escaped to the Outer Banks for what I’m calling our “dream building weekend.” And here’s the thing—it reminded me of a critical business lesson that too many Peninsula entrepreneurs (myself included) forget:

You can’t pour from an empty cup.

The Workaholic’s Dilemma

If you’re reading this, chances are you’re like me. You love what you do. You’re passionate about serving your community, growing your business, and making an impact. But somewhere along the way, “passion” became “obsession,” and “dedicated” became “always on.”

Julie has this incredible gift of helping me remember there’s a world beyond Worley’s Home Services, beyond the next workshop, beyond the 757 House Whisperer recording schedule. She’s my built-in accountability partner for work-life balance.

Dream Building vs. Goal Setting

We spent Saturday morning doing something I recommend to every entrepreneur: dream building. Not goal setting dream building.

We looked at beautiful Outer Banks houses. Not because we’re house hunting, but because we were reconnecting with the “why” behind all the hard work. What lifestyle are we building toward? What experiences do we want to create together?

The difference is crucial:

  • Goals are what you want to achieve
  • Dreams are what you want to experience

Adventures That Recharge Your Brand

Here’s what our weekend included:

  • 4×4 beach driving – Sometimes you need to get off the beaten path
  • Climbing 200 steps to the lighthouse top – The view is worth the effort
  • Ice cream at Julie’s favorite spot – Simple pleasures matter most
  • Meeting Chef Donnie from Ocean Blvd – Connecting with other passionate business owners

Each of these experiences recharged something in me that hours of business planning never could.

The ROI of Rest

Here’s what every Peninsula business owner needs to understand: Rest isn’t the opposite of productivity—it’s the foundation of it.

When I came back from OBX, I had:

  • Fresh perspective on current projects
  • Renewed energy for upcoming workshops
  • New story material for the podcast
  • A clearer vision for where Always Be Branding is heading

Your “OBX Weekend” Challenge

You don’t need to drive to the Outer Banks (though I highly recommend it). You need to create your own version of stepping away from the daily grind.

This week, I challenge you to:

  1. Schedule unplugged time – Put it on your calendar like any other important meeting
  2. Dream build with your partner – Talk about experiences, not just goals
  3. Connect with other passionate people – Like Chef Donnie, who reminded me why I love what I do
  4. Do something that requires you to be present – Climb those stairs, drive that beach, taste that ice cream

The Business Case for Balance

Your brand isn’t just what you do it’s who you are. And who you are is shaped by the full spectrum of your experiences, not just your work achievements.

The most authentic, sustainable brands come from entrepreneurs who:

  • Know their “why” beyond the business
  • Maintain perspective on what really matters
  • Stay energized and passionate about their work
  • Can connect with others as whole human beings

Finding Your Julie

If you’re married to your business, you need someone in your life who can help you stay married to what matters most. For me, that’s Julie. She’s not just my wife she’s my reminder that life is meant to be lived, not just worked.

Whether it’s a spouse, a friend, a coach, or a mentor, find someone who:

  • Sees your potential beyond your productivity
  • Encourages you to dream, not just plan
  • Helps you turn off the workaholic switch
  • Reminds you why you started this journey

Let’s Go! Let’s Grow! (But Let’s Live Too!)

My motto has always been “Let’s Go! Let’s Grow!” But I’m adding something new: “Let’s Live!”

Because the best entrepreneurs aren’t just building businesses—they’re building lives worth living. And sometimes that means climbing 200 steps to get a better view.
